Canoeing on the Hérault
Paddling the Hérault gorges from the village, an easy day with children.
The Hérault runs at the foot of the village, which makes this the easiest thing to organise from the property: you set off from more or less the doorstep, drift downstream, and a shuttle brings everyone back at the end. For a group arriving on Friday evening, it is the obvious Saturday morning.
The river alternates between long, calm stretches (deep and green) and small, very manageable rapids, enough to make the children shout without worrying anyone. In between, the cliffs close in and you paddle beneath the Thaurac massif, with the pale walls rising overhead. It is proper gorge scenery without the commitment of a genuinely technical descent.
The rental outfits along the valley offer several formats: a short run of about two hours, a half day, or a full day for those who want to go all the way. Two- and three-seater canoes let you put an adult at the back and one or two children in front, which settles the minimum-age question for most families. Buoyancy aids and dry barrels are provided.
One practical note for a group: book the day before rather than the same morning, particularly in July and August, and start early. The light is better, the water is cooler, and you are back for lunch in the courtyard. Later in the season the river runs low and some routes close, that is the moment to switch to stand-up paddle, which needs far less flow.
